Iran says the Hormuz lane the US backs is mined
SEVERE 78 ▬
Iran's Revolutionary Guards say three tankers hit mines and caught fire in 24 hours on the southern route through Hormuz, the lane the US has encouraged shippers to use. Iran reported a fourth tanker on fire east of the strait later on Thursday (CBS News).
|
So what? Neither Hormuz lane is clean this week: the north runs on Tehran's terms, and the south now carries mine and projectile risk. If you have cargo transiting in November, ask your carriers which lane they use and whether war risk cover still holds on it.
Exec take: We assess it is likely (60 to 75%) that another merchant ship is damaged in or near Hormuz in the next two weeks.
Plot twist: Iran has not identified the tankers and the US says the main lanes are clear. This may be a campaign to scare traffic north, not a minefield. |
The UK's maritime trade agency, UKMTO, confirmed a tanker was hit by an unknown projectile on an outbound transit near Khasab, Oman, with no injuries reported; it did not say who fired (Gulf News). The Guards dared CENTCOM to "prove" its mine clearing claim, and a dhow sank after a fire nine nautical miles north of Khasab (Arab News). On the diplomatic track, Vice President Vance wrote to Iran's security chief to revive talks, while US and Israeli officials say new strikes look likely after the midterms without a deal (Just Security). | BLACK SEA / BULGARIA
Sea drones sink a container ship in NATO waters
LOW 21 ▬
Three sea drones hit the Liberian-flagged Contship Jet in Bulgaria's exclusive economic zone on Wednesday, on a run from Haifa to Constanta with 421 containers. It sank; all 18 crew were rescued. At least six ships have been attacked by drones off Bulgaria this month (Reuters via gCaptain).
|
So what? This was a routine feeder leg into an EU port, not a war zone run. If your cargo moves through Constanta, Varna or Burgas, check whether your war risk cover and charter terms now treat the western Black Sea as a strike zone.
Exec take: Bulgaria scores Low on our map, but its sea lanes no longer do. Treat the western Black Sea as contested.
Plot twist: Nobody has claimed it. Bulgaria's navy chief says the drones' origin is unknown, Moscow denies involvement in recent attacks, and ZIM, which chartered the ship, calls the financial hit minimal. |
Maritime risk firm Ambrey assessed the drone was likely a variant of the Russian Murena 300S design; a French patrol aircraft gave warning but Bulgaria could not stop the attack (gCaptain, above). Twenty containers went overboard, and the manifest listed lithium ion batteries, acids and flammable liquids (Radio Bulgaria). ZIM says the ship is chartered, not owned (Ynet). | | TOGETHER WITH A mine claim in Hormuz, a drone off Bulgaria, a strike in Genoa: one weak link can stall a shipment. Dockers walk out at 113 ports today
GUARDED 35 ▲ 9
More than 25 unions plan strikes, stoppages or pickets at 113 ports in 22 countries and regions today, against arms shipments through civilian ports. Italy has a registered 24 hour national port strike, and 24 hour strikes are also called in France, Greece, India and Turkey (PortNews).
|
So what? Expect Friday cut offs to slip at Genoa, Gioia Tauro, Marseille, Le Havre and Piraeus, and Greek ferries to stay docked. Build spillover into Monday on Med and North Europe routings.
Exec take: Treat today as a lost day in Italy, France and Greece; elsewhere it is mostly a protest.
Plot twist: Genoa's port expects only a limited impact, and the big numbers, such as 40,000 delayed containers, are union estimates, not measurements. |
Spain has a two hour stoppage from 1:00 to 3:00 PM local, and French unions say 95% of port activity could stop, a union forecast (PortNews, above). Piraeus dockworkers say they will stop work from 08:00 to 11:00 GMT, while other Greek unions strike for 24 hours (World Ports Organization). | ISRAEL
Israel's final count: Netanyahu 53, the rest 67
HIGH 57 ▬
The count is done. Likud has 27 seats and Yashar! 21, leaving Netanyahu's bloc on 53, the Jewish opposition on 48 and Arab parties on 19. Results go to President Herzog on Nov 4 (Ynet).
|
So what? Nobody reaches 61 without a rare deal with Arab parties, so expect long talks and a caretaker government. Hold Israeli commitments that need a ministry sign off, and build slippage into permits and tenders.
Exec take: We assess it is likely (55 to 70%) that no new government is sworn in before year end.
Plot twist: A security service probe into suspected foreign interference will not change the result, the election committee says, but it hands both camps a story to fight over. |
Turnout was 77.9%, and the committee says only minor corrections are expected. It also says the Shin Bet probe into suspected bribery and foreign interference does not concern any particular community; reports linked it to Qatar, which Doha denies (Ynet, above). | 🎲 THE ODDS · traders vs. us | QUESTION | MARKET | ZED THREE | Hormuz normal by Dec 31 Mines now claimed on both lanes | 10% POLYMARKET 8% KALSHI | 3 to 10% | US-Iran ceasefire holds through midterms Talks track alive, strikes talk after | 88% POLYMARKET | 80 to 90% | Netanyahu is next PM Bloc is 8 seats short of 61 | 40% POLYMARKET | 35 to 50% | Russia-Ukraine ceasefire by Dec 31 Drones now hitting NATO waters | 12% POLYMARKET | 5 to 15% |
