Chokepoints explained
Strait of Gibraltar
The Strait of Gibraltar separates Spain and the British territory of Gibraltar in Europe from Morocco in Africa, joining the Atlantic Ocean to the Mediterranean Sea.
It is the Mediterranean's only natural opening to the Atlantic, so ships between the Suez Canal and northern Europe or the Americas pass through it.
Major ports sit on both shores, including Algeciras in Spain and Tanger Med in Morocco, which makes the strait a hub for transshipment as well as a route.
